INFORMATION ABOUT PIETRASANTA/SERAVEZZA/QUERCETA/FORTE DEI MARMI
The Romans settled in Versilia in the 2nd century B.C. and, following the subjugation of the Ligurians, built the “Delle Mordure” road between Querceta and Vaiana, which served as one of the main thoroughfares of the Roman road network.
In 1515, the marble quarries of Versilia were donated to the Medici, who built the road to transport the blocks to the sea; from the pier at Forte dei Marmi, they were loaded onto ships and sent all over the world.
In the 17th century, the Medici diverted the Versilia River to channel floodwaters into the marshes of Lake Porta in Montignoso.
Strettoia, Querceta, and Seravezza—which are part of “historic Versilia”—have been linked to Pietrasanta, Forte dei Marmi, and their marina since the 12th century.
At the end of the 19th century, the first real urbanization of the area began, both in the coastal town and in the surrounding countryside, including the hills; between the two world wars, Versilia became a major resort destination and experienced its greatest expansion between the 1950s and 1960s.
Celebrities, artists of all kinds, industrialists, professionals, intellectuals, politicians, and others… have always frequented Versilia, and even today, during the summer, the “FESTIVAL DELLA VERSILIANA” remains a major attraction that has helped to put Versilia—and particularly Pietrasanta and Forte dei Marmi—on the international map.
In the early 1900s, the town was served by a tram line, “La Tranvia della Versilia,” which connected it to Pietrasanta, Forte dei Marmi, Viareggio, and Arni; the line was decommissioned following the bombings of World War II.
CLIMATE
The climate is particularly mild, influenced by Atlantic currents, the moderating effect of the Tyrrhenian Sea, the shelter provided by the Apuan Alps and the Apennines, and the sirocco wind blowing in from Africa.
“A privileged area blessed with a temperate climate and balmy air, sheltered by the Apuan Alps from the harshest winds, which are tamed by the delightful hills at the foot of which the clear waters of the Versilia River flow before reaching the nearby sea. Given its favorable physical and meteorological conditions, we can call it the Côte d’Azur of our Tuscany.” E. Repetti (Carrara 1776–Florence 1852)."
