GOLFO DEL TIGULLIO: Portofino, Santa Margherita, Rapallo, Zoagli, Chiavari, Lavagna. The first town you reach heading south from Genoa is the renowned summer and winter tourist resort of Portofino, a corner of paradise in the Park’s Nature Reserve with is characteristic maquis shrubland. Moving down the coast brings you to the beautiful Paraggi Bay where the sea is a bright turquoise blue. Further along you have S. Margherita Ligure, located in one of the Gulf’s most beautiful bays and a popular holiday resort the whole year round. At the far end of the Tigullio Gulf lies Rapallo, another well-known tourist resort, thanks to its grand hotels along the seafront, a number of high-class establishments and the numerous artistic, social and sporting events, not to mention its privileged position in the most sheltered part of the Tigullio Gulf. Heading east out of Rapallo, the coast becomes a line of sea cliffs up to Zoagli, a picturesque resort clustered between the mountains and the small beach which stretches out under the railway arches. From here starts a wonderful seaview path along the coast, cut into the rock from which you have stunning views over the Gulf of Tigullio from the lighthouse of Portofino right across to Punta Manara on the Promontory of Sestri Levante. Continuing along the coast will bring you to Chiavari, located in a fertile plain surrounded by olive grove laden hills. Chiavari is a busy seaside resort which still keeps its old town centre, where the houses have low and irregular porticoes, but is also a beautiful modern town with large, spacious avenues lined with palm trees and oleanders and wide flowery squares. Beyond the mouth of the river Entella, is Lavagna, a modern lively seaside resort which is in continual expansion and boasts a modern and large port for pleasure craft and a wide sandy beach further along the coast.
BY TRAIN: along the Rome - Genoa and Bologna-Genoa lines with stations in all the main towns (except Portofino). BY CAR: on the A7 Milan - Genoa motorway and the A12 Genoa - La Spezia motorway, take the Rapallo or Lavagna exits. BY AIR: Genoa airport is a 30-minute drive away.
