Schiara
Tramonti 5 Wild Lands What if I told you that in the notorious Cinque Terre, those ancient fishing villages the whole world envies us for, a national pride and UNESCO World Heritage Site, and on the Costa di Tramonti, the coast stretching from Portovenere to Riomaggiore, there lies a fishing village perched above the sea, still unknown to mass tourism, offering unexpected surprises to those who wish to visit it? A seaside village literally clinging to the mountains and overlooking the sea, accessible on foot via a staircase entirely built by hand by the inhabitants—and perhaps this is precisely one of the reasons that has kept the crowds that normally jostle through the narrow streets of Riomaggiore and Vernazza away from this dreamlike location. I like to think of these places as a hidden treasure of Liguria to be jealously protected, and Schiara di Tramonti is one of them, a pearl by the sea.
Continuing among dry-stone walls and expertly cultivated vineyards, we reach the first houses of Schiara and the charming little Church of Saint Anthony. It is thought that Schiara owes its name to the fact that it is the first village to receive the sun in the morning, and also the first to be left in darkness in the evening. Schiara is the largest village on the Costa di Tramonti—or perhaps it would be more accurate to say the least small. From the Church of Saint Anthony, the verticality of this settlement, literally clinging to the mountain, is clearly visible. These are the homes of fishermen and farmers who once populated these lands; today, most are used as holiday homes or as bases for cultivating vineyards.
It is a place outside the world, and not only metaphorically speaking. Here, time seems to have stood still, but this is by no means a negative feeling; on the contrary, the peace and tranquillity emanating from this place are not easy to describe.
In this seaside village, we are offering for sale a delightful stone cottage with a terrace overlooking the sea, registered for residential use, arranged over two levels and consisting of a room with a cooking area on the ground floor and a large room with a fireplace and mezzanine on the upper floor. The surface area is 54 sq m. The property requires completion, with an estimated cost of approximately €75,000.
To reach the sea, there is a path near the house leading to “o scao,” as the locals call it—in other words, Schiara’s landing place, among the boat shelters and fishermen’s huts—or to Cantun Beach, which is decidedly spacious and pebbly, with some sandy stretches at both ends. In this paradisiacal place, you will find Ferale Rock directly in front of you, a pyramid-shaped sandstone rock crowned by a cross, which in the past represented the devotion of sailors.
Beyond the difficulties involved in reaching this hidden corner, once here you will feel as though you are in paradise, and it certainly will not be the journey required to get here that makes you give up, but rather the strong desire to keep on dreaming. Here, alone and far from the turmoil of the world, you will feel free and happy, almost invincible.
