More secluded than the clubs in Rapallo and Sanremo, Golf Club Garlenda, opened in 1965 in the town of the same name behind the beaches of Alassio, has carved out a niche of enthusiasts thanks to the welcoming atmosphere of its property: elegant and informal like a large country house, comfortable but without ostentation. No advertising, only word of mouth and a long tradition of excellence that began with the Italian Open in 1971 and continued with numerous national, international and professional championships held on this ever-evolving course. Few water hazards—the Lerrone stream runs alongside or crosses the course at five holes, with a trap on the second shot at hole 17—few elevation changes, except at Hole 3, with its final 150 metres uphill, and at Hole 10, a short par 4 with an elevated tee from which the strongest (and boldest) players can reach the green. Designed by the Englishmen John Morrison and John Harris, who were very active in Italy in the mid-20th century, the course’s difficulty lies in its tiny greens and out-of-bounds areas, which forgive no wayward shot. The course’s charm, however, is due to the considerable difference between one hole and the next, never monotonous because they are set among olive trees, oaks and maritime pines, impossible to forget and each with its own distinctive features.

The 18 holes of Golf Club Garlenda were designed with common sense: on the longer holes (12 and 16, for example), there is plenty of space, so you can hit harder; on the shorter holes, however, the out-of-bounds areas and small, undulating greens make the game more difficult and entertaining. A perfect example is hole 18, a short par 4 with an elevated tee, where accuracy on the first shot is essential to reach the green clear of the trees on the right side of the fairway. A well-protected green and out-of-bounds area on the left side, along the entire length of the hole.
