The "Borgo" is a hamlet of about 400 residents, situated halfway up the hillside at about 300 meters above sea level and 5 km from the city along the road that climbs toward the Apuan Alps region, a mountain range located between the Magra and Serchio rivers.

“Il Borgo” is 1 km from San Carlo and its thermal baths, named in honor of Saint Charles Borromeo, Bishop of Milan, who, suffering from kidney stones, derived great benefit from drinking the thermal water for several weeks; today it is recommended for urinary tract stones, kidney gravel, cystitis, and low-sodium diets.

Of medieval origin, “Il Borgo” consisted of a few buildings surrounding a small square, and access was controlled by the “Porta del Borgo.” Over the centuries, “Il Borgo” expanded without losing its original characteristics, eventually reaching its current size.

Until the 1980s, the “Borgo” was very active and even enjoyed a partially autonomous economy.
