ABOUT MASSA

Massa is the capital of the province of Massa and Carrara; its territory reaches an altitude of 1,891 meters (Mount Tambura) but extends across an alluvial plain overlooked by the Rocca hill, on which stands Malaspina Castle.

Founded 4 km from the sea (at an elevation of 65 meters) by the Apuan Ligurians in the pre-Roman era, it developed into several villages: Bagnara, Curtis De Quarantula, and Massa Prope-Frigidum, which in the 15th century—through the construction of extensive city walls—were united with Massa Vetere (La Rocca), giving rise to the city as we know it today. The city walls were later destroyed.

Massa was owned by the Obertenghi family and the Lucchesi family of Castruccio Castracani; in the 15th century, the inhabitants placed their trust in the Marquis of Fosdinovo, Antonio Alberigo I Malaspina. It began as a marquisate and became the Duchy of Massa and Carrara, ruled by the Malaspina and Cybo-Malaspina families—a period during which it reached the height of its splendor.

It was Napoleon who annexed it to the Principality of Lucca and Piombino, established the public institutions, and connected it to Carrara via the Foce Road. In 1829, it passed to the Dukes of Modena; in 1859, to the Kingdom of Sardinia; and in 1871, to Tuscany.

In the early 1900s, seaside tourism developed along the coast, and the Marina took shape, gaining such renown that during the Fascist era it was chosen by many companies as the site for their summer resorts.

In 1938, it was merged with the municipalities of Carrara and Montignoso to form the new municipality of Apuania, which was dissolved in 1946, restoring the three municipalities.

CLIMATE

The climate is particularly mild, of the sub-Mediterranean type, influenced by Atlantic currents and characterized by mild winters thanks to the moderating effect of the Ligurian Sea, the sirocco wind from Africa, and the protective shield provided by both the Apuan Alps and the Apennines.
